The History
The Jews probably used to live in Znojmo as early as in the middle of the 13th century, but their presence is proved only from 1363, when there is a record in the historical sources about their ghetto called platea judeorum or vicus judeorum. This closed ghetto was marked by ropes, wires and chains and it was closed especially at night and during important Christian holidays. When the Jews left the town, the Jewish street was renamed to Merry street to express the delight at their leaving.
At the place of the hotel used to be a smallish wooden or half-timbered building with wooden extensions adjoining the town wall street. This building was repeatedly destroyed by fire and rebuilt. Remainders of it are massive wooden beams dating back to the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, placed in the area of the hotel reception. In the beams there are original wooden pegs, which used to serve for better holding of plaster layers. The reception walls are decorated by original historical paintings made by technique fresco- secco. On the basis of the restoration research can be assumed that illusion of architecture used to be painted on the walls.
The construction history of the building reaches back to the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, when the front wing (today´s restaurant, reception and lobby bar) was built.
In the course of centuries the building served mostly to craft purposes and was rebuilt several times. During the reconstruction in 2009 a well, which served as a source of water up to 1468, was discovered in the yard area.
From the middle of the 20th century the building dilapidated. In 2008-2009 the building went through a large reconstruction, which has resulted in today´s look of the hotel.
